The Methodology of Sheikh Muhammad Abduh
This book examines the environment that shaped Sheikh Muhammad Abduh—including his family, his mentors, and the era in which he lived—as well as the modern age’s need for a new interpretation of the Quran and an analysis of earlier exegetical methodologies.
The main section is dedicated to a detailed study of Muhammad Abduh’s methodology: his body of work, the components of his approach, and his stance on the Sunnah, the doctrine of abrogation (naskh), Quranic narratives, and Isra’iliyyat (traditions derived from Jewish and Christian sources). The second section addresses the contemporary need for a modern interpretation of the Holy Quran, while the third section focuses specifically on Sheikh Muhammad Abduh’s exegetical method.
The study aims to evaluate the extent to which the Sheikh addressed the needs of his time and to place his methodology in its proper perspective—avoiding both excess and deficiency—while highlighting the influence his school of thought had on subsequent Quranic commentators.
